Mission
Overland Elementary School first opened its doors in 1931 with a mission to provide a high-level academic program that serves the educational needs of all types of learners. A distinguished program is offered through the integration of technology, enrichments, differentiation, and teaching approaches that develop a whole child. Our children access opportunities for greater academic excellence and cultural diversity without losing the personal caring, nurturing, safety, and intimacy of a neighborhood school.
Campus
There are 21 classrooms and several enrichment spaces. We have a Wonder of Reading Library, art studio, science lab, Life Sciences Discovery Garden, auditorium, cafeteria and a beautiful green courtyard.
Teachers & Staff
Overland's teachers are highly qualified life long learners. We have a National Board Certified Teacher at every grade level. Teachers collaborate as grade level teams to plan the instructional program, and all teachers regularly participate in professional development as well as additional professional development hours for GATE specific training. Every teacher has their own unique talents and teaching style.
Our support staff includes: Office Administrators, Cafeteria and Custodial Staff, Teacher’s Aides in every classroom, Instructional Coordinator, Resource Specialist, School Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist, Adapted PE Teacher, Art and Yoga Teachers from Barnsdall Art, Full-time Science Coordinator, Technology Teacher, Music Teacher, School Sports PE Coaches, and a full time Librarian.
Parents, Friends, and Family
Parent involvement is essential at Overland. We have an active PTA and fundraising organization through FOO (Friends of Overland). We have over 250 official parent and community volunteers support our campus throughout the year.
Students & Enrollment
Overland Elementary School currently has an enrollment of about 425 children. As a neighborhood community school, many of our students reside in the surrounding neighborhood of Cheviot Hills. We also welcome students from across the district through the SAS (School for Advanced Studies) Permit.
Classroom Composition & Placement
All of our teachers are unique and loved by the students and community. At the end of each year the teachers and administration at each grade level meet to create balanced classes for the following year. Factors considered in class placement include balance of gender, ethnicity, language ability, data based achievement levels, behavior and social interactions. Additionally, district requirements are followed as it pertains to the required groupings of students who are English Language Learners, students identified as GATE (grouped in clusters of at least 5), and logistical scheduling factors for students receiving SPED services.
Parents are notified online via the Parent Portal of their child’s class placement. We do not accept parent requests for teachers under and circumstance. We do not accept parent requests for classroom placement.
